What should you do if someone is choking?

Chocking emergency

When a person gets chocked during eating or something  goes into the mouth then you have to do the following:

  • Assess if the obstruction is partial or complete.
  • If the person can still talk, cough or cry out that means that the obstruction is partial.  If the person is unable to respond or can’t talk also holds his throat and his nails and lips become blue, the obstruction is complete.
  • Encourage the person to cough. Coughing can make the thing causing obstruction come out and clear the airway.
  • Don’t make the person to drink the water or suppress the cough.
  • If the person is unable to cough, make him stand straight, stand behind the person, make him lean forward and slap the person on the back. Make sure that the person should not be standing straight. If the person would be standing straight slapping him will make the thing cause more chocking.
  • Also don’t make a fist to hit, slap with the hand.
  • If person starts coughing stop slapping.
  • If still the person is chocking, perform Heimlich maneuver.

Heimlich maneuver:

  • Stand behind the person.
  • Put your hands around the body of the person. Your hands should be between the ribs and belly button.
  • Make a fist of one hand and put the other hand cupped around the fist.
  • Give blow from your arms.
  • Make sure your hands should be below the ribs otherwise you may break the ribs of the person.

If the person passes out with chocking then:

  • Lay down the person straight on the floor.
  • Put your hands on lower ribs and give blows each time from the abdomen up to the diaphragm.

How to perform Heimlich maneuver on yourself?

  • Try to cough.
  • Make a fist of your hand and blow on your chest.
  • If this doesn’t help then bend over a chair or a corner of a table. Make your elbows straight.

If an infant starts to chock:

  • Lay them on your forearm with their face down.

1

Nose bleed

    2

If a person loses consciousness

·         Don’t ever cause a fainted person to sit.

ü  Always check the heart rate. Raise the legs off the floor.
Also when they come back to consciousness don’t push them too hard, they may again lose consciousness.

3

Sprain or fracture

·         Don’t put heat or heated objects on sprain or fracture.

ü  Always use ice pack for a sprain or fracture. Don't put the ice directly on body.

     4

Removing debris from wound

ü  Always let the doctor remove the debris or remove it using washed hands and sterile tools.

·         Don’t treat a burn too quickly. A burn needs time to heal.

ü  Hold the burn under water for at least 20 minutes.

Chocking

·         Don’t give a chocking person water to drink. The chocking may become severe. Don’t slap their back when they are standing straight.

ü  Slap their back leaning them forward.

    7
