A Med Student's Journey

JOURNEY OF A MED STUDENT IN PAKISTAN: A JOURNEY OF DEPRESSION.

When a child is born in Pakistan its parents start thinking about its profession and if it is a daughter then no doubt she’ll be a doctor, whether she wants to be an engineer or an astronaut or a fashion designer or a pilot, she’ll be a doctor. Even if it is a boy but his parents are doctors then definitely he is going to be a doctor. At that time their journey starts to become a doctor.

They get their initial qualification from any simple school but one thing is important for them and is taught to them from that time that they can never get failed they can’t even come third or fourth in the class they have to stand always first in the class. If they’ll come third for even a single time their parents will put pressure on them and so the actual journey of pressure starts.

After they have done the matric they go to the college. Everybody gets into the college but only those are considered to become a doctor or a good student who have gain good marks in matric.

Then comes pre medical in which again under the pressure of their parents and society they get good marks and start preparation of the entry test. Entry test is the main phase of depression. Lucky are the students who get admission in the first time but pity on those who don’t get the admission in the first time.

With that depression they’ll try again for the entry test but how are they going to study with that depression of course they’ll get more depressed when they’ll get failed for the second time. While some students try their best for the second time and don’t go in to depression or simply they get it that medical is not everything in this world, leave it to the God and become depression free.

Those who failed for the second time now will go to a permanent depression for their lifetime. Some of them still want to go to the medical and will try for the third and for the fourth time but that is nonsense what if still they don’t get admission? Nothing but more depression is going to happen!

Now they will go to any field other than medicine but depression is not going to end there. In their life whenever they’ll think about it or will see a med student or a doctor that is going to hurt.

What about those who have got the admission in the first attempt or second or even third, Depression ends? No! A bigger depression starts of passing the professional exams and all the rotations in the class. In those five years whether they study or they study a lot that’s not going to be enough.

Sometimes they’ll study days and nights and still next day failing their exams and sometimes they’ll study not even for two hours and still passing their exams. Studying and still failing the exam or not getting enough marks will do nothing but add in to the depression.

During study they’ll have the pressure of syllabus after doing all the syllabus they’ll have the depression of retaining all that stuff of the syllabus in their minds. After that they’ll be degraded during their viva by comparing them with “hakeem” and calling them “gadha”, whether that teacher knows the answers or not he’ll cheerfully mock them at their answers.

After graduation their depression should end but no, then starts the house job. Before that they were mocked by their teachers only during viva in their offices or in front of a small group of other students and now they’ll be degraded in front of the whole hospital. They’ll do a full time duty in the hospital, their parents think that they should be able to pay for their own expenses but they don’t get enough money from their job and their expenses are cut off from their parents so again they go into the depression of money.

At the same time the girls are considered to get married and so the girls go in to a depression of their marriages. Those who don’t find a good boy to get married go in to the depression of not being worth finding a good boy and those who get married go into the depression of managing their jobs with their marriages soon they’ll have babies and so the depression increases.

After the house job ends there comes the depression of finding a job so that they have enough money for themselves. But simple MBBS is not going to give them enough money especially if they are married at that time and if they are not married, they need money to get married. So they’ll move towards doing specialization but again money is needed to do specialization so here comes the money stress. At that time the person will surely be a permanent patient of depression.

When they will have enough money for doing specialization some of them will have understood that Pakistan is not worth having their services and so they’ll try for PLAB or USMLE but again they need much more money for doing it then doing FCPS in Pakistan.

Some of them have enough money but they are still confused that whether they should be a patriot and serve their country or should focus on themselves and go abroad for further experiences. So again they go in to the stress of decision.

Suppose they chose to do an FCPS then keep in mind this also is not going to be free of stress. There are two parts of FCPS so firstly they’ll have the stress of passing the first part which is not easy to pass and when they’ll be done in the first part they’ll have to work as a junior doctor in a hospital.

At that time they’ll again be degraded by their senior doctors and now they’ll think that they are so stupid to be doctors. Then they have to give an intermediate module exam to give the second part of FCPS.

Finally they pass the second part and become officially a specialized doctor. But the stress doesn’t end at this point then comes the stress of dealing with their patients, treating them and God forbid if any one dies due their mistakes they’ll live their entire life with that regret. So turns out that happier and luckier are those who didn’t get admission in the M.B.B.S.
